Abstract

In recent months, Bolivia has seen a steady rise in the prices of essential goods, raising public concern over a potential return to inflation levels reminiscent of the 1980s, when inflation reached a record 11,400%. Comparisons are being drawn between the current context (2007) and that earlier period, noting the presence of a popular government and natural disasters as common elements. In 1983, a widespread drought severely damaged agricultural and livestock production, leading to sharp food price increases. Similarly, today, the El Niño phenomenon and other climate-related events are negatively impacting the eastern and western regions of the country, especially Beni. Although current inflation is not yet generalized, this analysis highlights the importance of reviewing economic theory and drawing on national and international research to better understand how climate disruptions and economic policies interact in shaping price stability.
